Films on Demand & Streaming Video: Using FOD & Feature Films for Education

Films on Demand (FOD)

To Navigate to Films on Demand:

  1. From the library webpage, select the "Databases" tab.
  2. On the right-hand side of the Databases page, find the "Browse Databases and Periodicals by Name" box and select "E-F."
  3. Scroll to the F databases and select the Films on Demand collections you want to view.

Browsing Films on Demand

  • Browse the featured videos by category on the front page. Only a few of the featured videos will show at one time. To view all videos in the category, click the arrow on the right of each horizontal list to scroll through the offerings, or click the category title you want to view to see the full list.
  • Browse all videos by clicking on the menu icon Three horizontal lines  at the top of the main page. From there you can select the visible subjects, categories, and producers, or click "View All" to see the full lists. 
  • When browsing videos by subject, use the drop-down menu to switch between sub-categories.
  • Use the "Filter Options" to narrow your results.

Searching Films on Demand

  • Type your keyword(s) into the search box at the very top of the page.
  • Use the "Filter Options" to refine your results.
  • Please note that by default FOD searches for full videos and video segments. If you only want to see full video, click the "All Formats" drop-down box and select Full Titles. Then click "Apply".

To view a video in Films on Demand or the Feature Films collection

  • Click on the title or image of the video you wish to see.
  • Click the play button in the middle or at the bottom left of the video window.
  • Use the icons in the bottom right of the window to change viewing options, which include closed captioning, playback speed, video quality and screen size.

Films on Demand includes a citation tool to help students properly cite the videos they use or refer to:

  1. When viewing a video in FOD, click the Citation button above the video description.
  2. In the pop-up window, select the citation style you are using from the list at the top.
  3. Highlight and copy the citation to paste into your Works Cited list. You can also export to several citation managers.

Creating an account is simple and free, and allows you to access some of the more advanced features of Films on Demand. Once you create an account in FOD or the Feature Films collection, you can use the account in both.

To create an account in Films on Demand:

  1. Click Your Profilein the upper right of the page.
  2. In the Login window, click "New user? Sign up."
  3. Fill in the required information and click "Create Account".

To add a video to your Favorites, click the Add to button underneath the video window. (If not signed in to your account, you will be asked to do so or prompted to create an account, if you do not have one.)

  1. From the dropdown box, select the favorites folder you want to save the video to.
  2. To create a new favorites folder, type the name in the second box and click "New Folder," then select that folder from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click "Add to Folder" then close the pop-up window.
  4. To view and edit your favorites, click on the profile button in the upper right of any page, then select "My Content."

To add a video to a Playlist, click the Add to button underneath the video window. (If not signed in to your account, you will be asked to do so or prompted to create an account, if you do not have one.)

  1. Click "Playlist."
  2. On the Playlist menu, select the part of the video to add. Select "Add Full Title" for the entire video or one of the list segments. If you have created any custom segments, they will be in the list. Hold Ctrl to select multiple segments.
  3. Select the playlist you want to use from the drop down menu.
  4. To create a new playlist, type the playlist name in the second box and click "New Playlist," then select that folder from the drop-down menu.
  5. Click "Add To Playlist" then close the pop up window.
  6. To view, edit and share your playlists, click on the profile button in the upper right of any page, then select "My Content."

Feature Films for Education

To Navigate to Feature Films for Education:

  1. From the library webpage, select the "Databases" tab.
  2. On the right-hand side of the Databases page, find the "Browse Databases and Periodicals by Name" box and select "E-F."
  3. Scroll to the F databases and select "Feature Films for Education".

Feature Films for Education is now available on mobile devices.

Browsing Feature Films

  • Browse the most popular, recently added, and featured movies by genre on the front page. Only some of the featured videos will show at one time. To view all videos in the category, click the arrow on the right of each horizontal list to scroll through the offerings, or click the category title you want to view to see the full list.
  • Browse all videos by hovering your mouse on the menu icon Three horizontal lines  at the top of the main page and selecting "Browse by Genre" or "Browse All Titles".
  • You can filter by movie rating and copyright date by using the check boxes on the right.

Searching Feature Films

  • To search Films on Demand or the Feature Film Collection, type your keyword(s) into the search box at the very top of the page. Refine your search with the Filters to the right. You can filter by genre, MPAA rating, and copyright date.
  • Hover the mouse over a movie to learn more about it. Click to go to the movie's information page.

To view a video in the Feature Films collection

  1. Click on the title or image of the video you wish to see.
  2. Click the play button next to the audio and subtitle option you prefer.
  3. Click the play button in the video window that appears. (You may need to do this twice.)
  4. To expand the screen size, click the "Full Screen" icon in the bottom right of the video window.

Creating an account is simple and free, and allows you to access some of the more advanced features of Feature Films for Education. Once you create an account in Feature Films or Films on Demand, you can use the account in both.

  1. Click Your Profilein the upper right of the page.

  4. To view and edit your favorites, click on user profile menu in the upper right of any page, then select "My Favorites."
