Welcome to the Early Childhood Education Program @ VGCC!
The Early Childhood Education curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from birth through eight in diverse learning environments. Course work includes child growth and development; physical/nutritional needs of children; care and guidance of children; and communication skills with families and children.
The Early Childhood Education Associate Degree is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children’s Associate Program Standards. For more information, please visit the Association's accreditation website.

Center for Child and Family Policy
The Center for Child and Family Policy was established at Duke University on July 1, 1999. We bring together faculty, researchers, staff, and students in an effort to achieve our mission: to contribute to solutions to important problems affecting today’s children and families, through an integrated system of teaching, research, service, and policy engagement. Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute
The Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute is one of the nation's oldest and largest multidisciplinary centers devoted to the study of young children and their families. About 300 researchers, implementation and technical assistance specialists, staff, and students work on more than 75 projects related to developmental disabilities; early care and education; physical and social health; professional development, technical assistance, and implementation science; public policy and evaluation; and racial, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, and socioeconomic diversity.
National Association for the Education of Young Children
The NAEYC's mission is to serve and act on behalf of the needs, rights and well-being of all young children with primary focus on the provision of educational and developmental services and resources.
National Coalition for Campus Children's Centers
The National Coalition for Campus Children's Centers is a nonprofit educational membership organization. It supports research and activities affecting college and university early childhood education and service settings, family and work issues, and the field of early childhood education in general.
National Institute for Early Education Research
The National Institute for Early Education Research conducts and communicates research to support high-quality, effective early childhood education for all young children. Such education enhances their physical, cognitive, and social development, and subsequent success in school and later life.
North Carolina Institute for Child Development Professionals (NCICDP)
"The North Carolina Institute for Child Development Professionals is a non-profit organization that has worked since 1993 to increase the education and compensation of early educators working with or on the behalf of young children ages birth to twelve in early care and education settings in North Carolina."

Center on the Social and Emotional Foundations for Early Learning (CSEFEL)
CSEFEL is focused on promoting the social emotional development and school readiness of young children birth to age 5. CSEFEL is a national resource center funded by the Office of Head Start and Child Care Bureau for disseminating research and evidence-based practices to early childhood programs across the country.

National Center for Pyramid Model Innovations (NCPMI)
An organization that seeks improve and support the capacity of state systems and local programs to implement an early childhood multi-tiered system of support to improve the social, emotional, and behavioral outcomes of young children with, and at risk for, developmental disabilities or delays.

U.S. Government Resources
Food and Nutrition Service (U.S. Department of Agriculture)
The Food and Nutrition Service administers several programs that provide healthy food to children including the National School Lunch Program, the School Breakfast Program, the Child and Adult Care Food Program, the Summer Food Service Program, the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, and the Special Milk Program. Administered by State agencies, each of these programs helps fight hunger and obesity by reimbursing organizations such as schools, child care centers, and after-school programs for providing healthy meals to children.
Office for Early Childhood Development (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)
The Office for Early Childhood Development promotes a joint approach to improving the availability of high quality early learning and development programs. We are made up of the Office of Head Start, the Office of Child Care, and the Interagency Team.
Office of Early Learning (U.S. Department of Education)
The Office of Early Learning is the principal office charged with supporting the Department's Early Learning Initiative with the goal of improving the health, social-emotional, and cognitive outcomes for children from birth through third grade, so that all children, particularly those with high needs, are on track for graduating from high school college- and career-ready.

Early Childhood Research & Practice
The online archive of Early Childhood Research & Practice, an Internet-only journal published from 1999-2015, features articles related to the development, care, and education of children from birth to approximately age 8. Beginning with the spring 2004 issue (Volume 6, Number 1), the journal became fully bilingual, with all articles published in both English and Spanish.
Teaching Young Children
Teaching Young Children highlights current thinking on best practices in early childhood education, innovations in the field, research and its implications, and interesting ideas for and from preschool teachers.
Voices of Practitioners
The main purpose of Voices of Practitioners is to provide a vehicle for publishing the research of early childhood teachers, who are often underrepresented as authors in the educational research arena. This publication includes informative articles, resources, and tools to promote the participation of early childhood teachers in teacher research.
